14.2 Bacterial Infections
The presentations of bacterial infections are common to both the HIV unexposed, exposed and infected children. However, earlier in the decade the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added this category to the AIDS defining conditions [5]. Although bacterial infections may be common to all children, the spectra of disease presentations are different and may be more severe in the HIV infected child. More current published data suggest that the HIV exposed uninfected infant has a different immunologic profile from the unexposed infant and hence pre-disposed to bacterial infections with encapsulated organisms [6].
